Oil and Gold Aqua bronze on hardboard Kintsugi (or kintsukuroi) is a Japanese method for repairing broken ceramics with a special lacquer mixed with gold, silver or platinum. The philosophy behind the technique is to recognise the history of the object and to visibly incorporate the repair into the new piece instead of disguising it. The process usually results in something more beautiful than the original. Kintsugi can relate to the Japanese philosophy of ‘no mind’ (mushin), which encompasses the concepts of non-attachment, acceptance of change and fate as aspects of human life. This piece of work embodies this concept as a reminder to self that the acceptance and release of all your experiences in life grow your soul and make you more beautiful.
