Demetre arrived in Boston from Athens Greece, in the mid 70's and later studied atthe Mass College of Art earning his BFA degree with awards. Business related projects between the US and Europe had a profound influence upon his artwork as a painter, photographer, and generally as a artist. Although his passion for movie-making was very strong in the first years of his career photography and painting always dominated his free time. After a few years, he abandoned his film production aspirations and started painting and drawing. The work from the early 80s has a structural more cubist and orderly approach constructing forms and figures with strong colors and firm brushstrokes. His work is a visual representation of the ideas, thoughts and imaginary that are his makeup. Later 80s works depict a synthesis of images from dreams, cubist shapes, true abstract shapes and figures. Early 90s are characterized by abstract figurative forms, themes from ancient classical mythology and religion. In late 90s an abstract turn is noticed in his work with continued explorations of shape and color. The new millennium pieces are a mix of colors, shapes, and classical studies in Greek history and mythology. Viewing the entire span of his work a progression of themes is noticed without a specific style. The work is new, fresh and free, and the artist attempts to create a simple dialogue between the viewer and his art work. In recent years a lot of his artistic energy is manifested in the development of contemporary concepts based on mythological, historical figures, events and he continues a study of colors and shapes. Most of the work is acrylic on canvas, pastel and ink on paper and some in oil.
