Kumonryu are midnight black colored fish that are named after a Japanese dragon of transformation. This fish is said to bring about change in life circumstances. In Japanese, "koi" is another word that means "affection" or "love" so they are a symbol of love and friendship in Japan. I love Koi because they are so beautiful. For centuries, the beauty of the Koi has made these remarkable fish the subject of all types of artwork. One legend depicts how a Koi climbed up the falls on the Yellow River at a point called Dragon Gate and was transformed into a dragon. Based on that legend the Koi became a symbol of perseverance, tenacity, ambition, aspiration and advancement. Another remarkable thing about the Koi is that when it is caught, it would lie still on the chopping board without struggling or flapping around. This led to the Koi being a symbol of courage, composure, peace and tranquility under pressure.

I grew up on the prairies of Alberta but always felt a particular pull towards the mountains, ocean and warmer weather so after pursuing a career in Criminology, and raising a set of identical twin boys I moved to BC in 2009 and felt inspired. I realized my one true regret in life was putting my art aside for so long, so with the encouragement of my family, I took the initiative and began devoting myself to painting full time and haven't looked back! After leaving such a stressful career, I felt it was necessary to re-evaluate what I focused on, what I attracted into my life and if my creativity can inspire and bring happiness to others then I feel my life has meaning. In 2015, I opened Ellis Art Studios, a 6000sq ft fine art facility located downtown Kelowna that utilizes a mentor–apprentice model to prepares artists, emerging or professional to develop their art and design skills. I now reside in Vancouver, Canada but spend part of the year painting and travelling the world. Along with my studio and exhibition practice, I also provide workshops, consulting, painting demonstrations and organize art events worldwide. My latest project is a long term art residency in Bangkok, Thailand.
