This work from Cain is hand painted onto original pages from 'Gone with the Wind'. This epic novel is written by Margaret Mitchell in the 1936. The book centers around a young woman, Scarlett O’Hara, and is initially set on the eve of the American Civil War in the spring of 1861. Along with Scarlett girlish charms, which could rival the prettiest of the Southern Belles, Scarlett was intelligent and headstrong. Even in the face of extreme war and hardship, Scarlett possessed the ability to grow from an adolescent into a hardworking and successful woman. Scarlett O’Hara had true determination. Her reactionary stand against gender inequality could be seen as a role model, no less when the book was published in 1936, than it would today. Cain reflects this by painting a contemporary styled young lady, wearing the Stars and Stripes. She stares transfixed and intently at the narrative from this early publication of Gone with the Wind. Cain creates beautiful and intriguing art imagery by painting carefully composed figures on vintage book pages. Any space between the figures exposes a background, which gives them context and narrative. Books only come alive when they are read. The passing of time and trends will shape a reader’s interpretation of a book. These are often reflected as annotations that a reader leaves behind. Instead of an annotation Cain interprets and paints a contemporary presence of the reader. Cain's art attempts to show compositions that radiate a sense of interaction between the narrative and the reader's image. The subjects are turned away from the observer, seemingly engaged in the narrative, which remains magically elusive. As time continues to pass, the contemporary presence of the reader will age along with the book. Interestingly, this ageing will be observed by future viewers of the painting. These works are hand painted in Indian ink onto pages from vintage editions of classic stories. The pages and subjects are carefully selected to bring relevance to Cain's work. The paintings are mounted on robust wooden stretchers and canvas ready to hang on delivery. Cain
