Milena Nicosia

About the Artist

Milena Nicosia

Italy

For Milena Nicosia, art is breath, narration, and eternity.
Born in Sicily, she has been painting since the age of four and has never lost the enthusiasm that first guided her hand. Her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence — immersed in Alchemy, Aesthetics, Philosophy, Symbology, and Art History — nurtured in Milena Nicosia an endless desire for experimentation.
The artistic research of Milena Nicosia begins with the idea that every image is an imprint: a mark that holds what remains and what disappears. Her works are “traces of light,” emerging from a “mental journey through the memory of the iris and the emotional memory,” an inner archive preserving everything her eyes have witnessed since childhood.
Milena Nicosia paints with powdered pigments and with light, creating surfaces where memory becomes matter and matter becomes narrative. Imprints — both material and immaterial — are her way of exploring the fragile architecture of human experience: presences that surface, absences that persist, echoes returning from interior landscapes.
The identity of Milena Nicosia is a duality expressed through materials.
Fabrics, lace, and delicate textures embody the feminine side of her history: her grandmother’s crochet work and the silent care of the women in her family.
Nails, bolts, and mechanical metal elements represent the masculine side: her father, her grandfather, and her own structural strength.
These two worlds coexist within Milena Nicosia and within her works, forming a genetic map transformed into visual language.
Light is her primary instrument.
It reveals and erases, protects and exposes.
In the series Drawn by Light, Milena Nicosia uses it as a force that suspends reality, turning objects into luminous architectures. These works are not real landscapes but inner places — rituals of healing and purification, baths of light where perception becomes an act of rebirth.
The practice of Milena Nicosia moves through cycles of transformation.
In the “Nests,” small imaginary creatures cling and settle among post‑human mechanical debris: inhospitable and uninhabitable places that become symbols of strength, rebellion, and resilience.
In her works dedicated to the Post‑Anthropocene, geological wounds, fragments, and remnants transform into metaphors of fear, resistance, and renewal.
In the work of Milena Nicosia, time is not linear: it is stratification, sediment, a place of reconciliation.
