ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Ladders symbolize the pathway to communion with the divine or the heavens in many traditions: Jacob's ladder in the Judeo-Christian tradition, Horus' ladder in Egyptian mythology, the seven-runged Mithraic ladder, the shamanic pole. The red hands represent the creative impulse, lifeblood of the artist-creator--and they are actually my hands. The vivid blue sky is typical of New Mexico. The twin mountains represent Sun and Moon Mountains here in Santa Fe, although they are echoed by hills and mountains around the world. When I completed this pastel painting in my Taos studio, I spray-fixed it outside as usual and then touched up a few areas of the sky. When I resprayed it, the touchups showed; so I had to redo the entire sky. When I refixed it again, the original touchups still showed through. I put yet another coat on the blue sky and did not spray fix it this final time. All these four layers gave the blue sky--and the whole image-- its intensity.

Sensitivity, playfulness, and delicacy. Essence of nature captured. Abstract and expressive imagery emerges from texture and archetype, as the chemistry of consciousness depicts subtle levels of creation. Artworks by a self-taught artist with a doctorate in Creativity, Art, & the Sacred speak to the heart and subconscious, bypassing the intellect. "My first memory is of insisting when I was four that prospective buyers of our Atlanta house see the paintings I'd done in my bedroom closet." Born Atlanta, GA. Grew up in Jacksonville, FL. 30 years Santa Fe, NM. 8 years in Marin County, CA. “Art is a doorway, the freshness of the fountain within. My inspiration comes from quiet interior states, meditation experiences, and contemplative creative time with nature, books, and art. I create art that expands and enlivens consciousness, that nourishes, heals and makes whole, and is a wonder to myself and others.” Artist Interviews: + many more from 2022, 2023 on my website.
