The Lake District, UK is special to me in many ways, firstly as it is my birthplace and more importantly it is a constant source of inspiration. The constantly changing sky and it's light on the hills and mountains give endless opportunity for exploration of colour and application of paint. I decided to tackle this scene in an abstract way, exaggerating the colours slightly and predominantly using a palette knife, which allowed unusual and exciting marks to be made.

Martin Varennes-Cooke is an original painter and illustrator who mixes a Pop art aesthetic with a Fine art approach. He has exhibited in London, Glasgow and his hometown of Brighton. Martin is influenced by street art and nature, in particular birds, which have become his signature and a main focus of his work. He mixes the human form and nature in colorful and contemporary ways, always striving to show that the subjects have a sense of unity with the feathered creature accompanying them. Martin believes an artist is always evolving and this is true in his case. Recent work has had an 'otherworldly' quality which evokes intrigue and questions in the viewer.
