About The Artwork

A large oil painting of a woman at night with a torch. What does she see when she walks out in the dark? She is surprised by fantastic bees, insects and mud crabs as she points the torch to reveal stunning colours and light. This impressionistic original oil painting was made by a renowned Australian artist Dmitry Kuznichenko. Dmitry has been described by Veronique Helmridge-Marsillian, Doctor of Philosophy, University of Sydney, as a stunning artist. She says this " What do you get, when old-world European aestheticism is transplanted to the Aussie backyard? You get a resplendent affirmation of life, dappled with humour". Dmitry here - can I tell you a story that inspired me to paint Fabula? I remember how once, when my daughter was little, she said to me, ‘’Papa, let’s go to the park in the dark.I may feel a bit scared. I mean when we get there.’’ ‘’But I am with you.’’ ‘’Can we, please, go home and take a torch with us?’’ So we went back home to find a torch. ‘’Fabulous!’’ She exclaimed flicking the light switch on the torch. That is how the idea for the oil painting ‘’Fabula’’ was born. It had become our ritual, in the evenings to go to the park by the river. When the sun would go down, everything seemed to have gained a new character. To call a gumtree a tree in the dark seemed like a wrong thing to do. We tried to invent new words so that the names of things that we saw in the dark would match their appearances. ‘’Things in the dark give up their names, ‘’ she proclaimed during one of our walks. ‘’Then, the only thing that remains is a meaning.’’ ‘’ All you need to do is point a torch.’’

Dmitry was born in 1962 in Ukraine and he studied for six years at the Academy of Fine Arts and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in 1986. Because of the many challenges of life under Russian rule, Dmitry left to find a new life in Australia and has been living here for over 30 years. As soon as he arrived in Australia, Dmitry started to embrace the colours and stories of a much more open and free society. What’s more he was and is very productive! Dmitry has an extensive collection of drawings, watercolour paintings, and oil paintings. He is renowned for his use of light and perspective which give all of his works a kind of surreal movement across the canvas or paper. Dmitry is in many ways a modern impressionist. His watercolours and oil paintings examine the objects around us - street scapes, ordinary people, children and pets, city scapes, working people and so on. He forces us to re-examine these objects via vivid representations of how these objects may look with a slightly different perspective. And in most cases when we look at the world through Dmitry's impressionist pallet, we find very positive messages about the world around us, and our place in it.
