One of my historically researched traditional paintings depicting the dramatic launching of the Sidmouth lifeboat on New Year's Eve 1872.

I know this stretch of coastline very well and I used to have a studio on the cliff top near the centre of this painting.

The Bordeaux brigantine 'Emmeline' had got into difficulties off a leeward shore in a southerly gale that had been blowing for several days. The crew of 11 were successfully taken off and because of the worsening sea conditions the lifeboat could not land back at Sidmouth. Consequently the lifeboat, then considerably overloaded, was rowed to the nearest sheltered beach at the fishing village of Beer.

The lifeboat returned to Sidmouth on New Year's Day 1873.

This painting is supplied ready to hang in a bespoke hand finished frame. A traditional style frame but with a modern twist and cololoured in a grey wash over a subtle gold created specifically for this painting.

Exterior framed size 30 x 46 x 3.5 inches.

I have long been fascinated with painting water and nudes in water. I find the reflective properties, the movement and the distorting qualities of water provide me with a wealth of challenges. I find that although my aim is always to produce a high degree of realism in my paintings I am constantly using sequences of abstract shapes to achieve an effect. "Peter's work has been seen around the world. In his paintings reflections of both classical and modern interpretations can be found. With superb and interesting techniques he infuses a harmony between natural realism and the painted surface creating subtle yet dramatic imagery. Influences can be identified from many periods of art history. In particular the realism of the late nineteenth century and the photo-realism of the twentieth century."
