Lavender en Provence Painting

Creating a tranquil scene of the dreamlike landscapes of Provence truly is a pleasure for an artist who is happiest when surrounded by nature’s beauty. Drawing upon inspiration from these symmetrical lavender fields with low-lying blue hazy mountains of the recognisable Provence region. Painting in the atmospheric clouds that so often tumble over the mountains adds to the depth of the painting and create a sense of movement of the sky and time lapsing in the field. As is typical with my Provence paintings, I love to have a focal point of a traditional outhouse and tree of sorts that really set the scene and sit so beautifully in the French rural landscapes. The light captured in the clouds and the tops of the lavender is typical of the early evening sun. Taking the viewer down the paths between each perfectly formed lavender row I was able to indulge in painting each striking green stem and the changing colours the lighting and shadow creates on the lavender. Choosing to paint the scene in acrylics, I was able to conjure up vibrant shades of the lavender and enhance the field with metallic paints here and there to add to the depth of the painting and rainbow of blues and purples.
