In recreating this critical moment of the story, I wanted to convey the sense of sanctuary that Rivendell represents in contrast to the unknown danger that awaits the Fellowship on the path ahead. The structures of Rivendell are clear and well established compared to the lush and idyllic surroundings which I tried to paint in a more ethereal tone. Once past the bridge, however, the path ahead is unclear and murky. Watercolor on 100% cotton Arches paper.
