In 1490, Leonardo da Vinci delved into the architect Vitruvius' theory on human movement within circles and squares, blending the human form with geometry. He used male models and cadavers to study and highlight the “ideal body”, emphasizing perfect proportions akin to human anatomy. This exploration, rooted in the belief that "man is the measure of all things" as the philosopher Protagoras said. This belief impacted the understanding of the female body, historically overshadowed by the male perspective. This series challenges the traditional focus on the Vitruvian man, now exploring anatomy through abstract, expressive strokes with a queer approach. Imagine if Vitruvius had been a woman and Leonardo had been Leonora – how would this have shaped our world?

Henriette Hellstern was born in Aarhus, Denmark 1979. She grew up on the country side at the base of the Mols Mountains in Denmark. The rough nature and fresh air, fields, trees and the ocean were places she went to contemplate and enjoy. She was accepted to Funen Art Academy in 2006 and graduated her MFA in 2011 with a large series of expressionistic portraits called Sexualities. Now she lives and works in Copenhagen. Henriette Hellstern work was evolved from being very abstract to more and more figurative over time, but always with a very direct honest approach. "I want the audience to connect with my artworks, and by being able to see the strokes and splashes we get a language with no words, where the image can take us into new adventures", she says. She has won several International art prizes and exhibited in San Francisco, New York, Vilnius, Athens and Brisbane to name a few. Latest she has been in a self chosen isolation in her Copenhagen studio, actually before Corona, where she has started a series that deals with nature taking revenge.
