Reunion Island
Virginie Munch (1971) is a contemporary painter and sculptor based on Réunion Island. Initially trained in applied textile arts, she has developed over the years a singular body of work where abstraction, enigmatic figures, inner graffiti, and primitive traces converge. Her practice explores what escapes language: the unspeakable, silent tensions, and the emotional landscapes that rise to the surface. Influenced by the cultural diversity of the Indian Ocean and by her many travels, she weaves a visual language that blends her artistic handwriting with raw motifs, her fragmented silhouettes with vibrant colors. Her works—both paintings and sculptures—seem to emerge from an intimate territory where memory, instinct, and deep humanity intersect. Her current research revolves around abstract figures such as “L’Homme Sauvage”, “Le Solitaire”, “Un Monsieur”, and “La Femme Chat”, which embody fragility, strength, mystery, or the wild part within each of us. In parallel, her more abstract series continue an exploration of memory and inner vibration. Each piece is conceived as a presence, a fragment of story revealed to the viewer. Virginie Munch thus invites a sensitive encounter: a space where one can feel what slips away, what pulses, what seeks to be born, or what holds a suspended moment. Virginie Munch works with acrylic, pastel, and charcoal, and through her sgraffito technique developed over time, she carves into the surface to reveal interlaced lines and textures that echo her textile and graphic influences. Since 2024, she has been officially listed as a rated artist, and her works have entered private collections in 14 countries. Her work is regularly exhibited in galleries and art fairs, notably on Réunion Island and in mainland France, and has been recognized in international competitions.
