Lesbia and her sparrow are characters in the poems of Catullus, a Roman poet who lived in the first century BC. Lesbia was the pseudonym he used for his lover Clodia, a noblewoman and the sister of a notorious politician. Catullus wrote two poems about Lesbia’s sparrow, which was her pet and a symbol of her affection. In the first poem, Catullus expresses his envy of the sparrow, who gets to play with Lesbia and receive her kisses. In the second poem, Catullus mourns the death of the sparrow, who has been taken away by the ‘evil shadows of Death’. He invites all the lovers and the gods of love to join him in his grief, and laments the loss of such a beautiful creature. Catullus was inspired by the Greek poet Sappho, who also wrote about sparrows as the companions of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Sparrows were associated with eroticism and lust in ancient cultures, because of their frequent mating and their proximity to humans. Catullus used the sparrow as a metaphor for his own desire and passion for Lesbia, as well as for the fragility and sorrow of love. His poems are considered masterpieces of Latin literature, and have influenced many poets and artists throughout history.
