ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"Light of the Wood" was inspired by a lovely forest close to my studio in the Peak District. My inspiration began with my walks through the beautiful Peak District where I live close to the natural world. I love every season each having it's own beauty. Autumn is full of glorious colour, like a symphony that reaches a crescendo of beauty as nature moves towards sleep The painting has colours of amber, copper, pink and gold with a mood of optimism and peaceful calm. The light falls through beautiful leaves while the delicate textures created with a palette knife create abstraction in the foreground. An original artwork, one of a kind, this painting has been created with high quality acrylic paints on deep edged canvas. I begin with observation of the place making notes and taking photographs to work from in the studio. From these beginnings I work intuitively, painting some base layers with a brush and then impasto techniques layer on layer applied with a palette knife. Harnessing optical mixing techniques employed by the impressionists and some of the methods of the old masters such as scumbling and glazing. I continue working until the painting reaches a natural conclusion. The result is a contemporary painting, which lies somewhere between abstraction and realism. The painting continues round the sides, a frame is not needed and it is ready to hang.

Working from observation of nature Amanda gathers visual information with a sketchbook or camera and often begins a canvas en plein air, finishing these preliminary pieces in her studio. Working expressively in acrylics or oils, with a palette knife and other mark making techniques, she works layer upon layer until the painting reaches a natural conclusion forming paintings that lie somewhere between abstraction and realism. “Painting is a response to the beautiful landscape around me, the experience of being in the place is as much an important part of the process as drawing. I attempt to capture the spirit of the land and that quiet sense of tranquillity that coexists with a closeness to the natural world. I am moved by dramatic light sweeping over the rugged elements chased by clouds and the timeless changing sea when visiting the coast. I have a passion for expressing nature in bright vivid colours and nothing gives me more pleasure than when people say they love their painting.” Amanda exhibits widely and her paintings have found homes with private collectors in the UK, America, Asia and Europe. She is represented by several galleries in the UK.
