About The Artwork

These works are based on trees from the creeks and storm drains around my neighborhood. During the past weeks of isolation, I have found solace in escaping my house and taking walks. I've been inspired by the way the tree roots are exposed but still holding firmly to the earth or how some trees grow together keeping each other up. Lisa Horlander is a mixed media artist whose work explores spaces in between, with a focus on the hidden green areas within her city. She is interested in the contours between tree branches and roots along with contrasting colors within a particular transition of time. Horlander transplanted from California during childhood and grew up inspired by the grand old trees and magnificent skies filling East Texas. She completed her BFA from The University of Texas at Tyler in 2017 and participated in The Summer Residency Program at New York University, in 2018. Horlander recently became a Studio Artist with The Cedar Union in Dallas TX and will exhibit with The Other Art Fair in Fall 2020. She has exhibited in group exhibitions spanning Texas, and most recently exhibited with The Vignette Art Fair in Dallas and The Femme Abstract in Austin. She was honored to be the 2019 Committee Chair with Gallery Main Street in Tyler TX and appointed Mayor Barbara Bass’s Artist of the Year for Tyler in 2012.
