Layers are a central element in Margit T. Schranner´s work. These layers can take the form of color, of wax, of printed or photographic material, or layers of 3D perspex and result in works on paper and canvas as well as objects and installations. The image of the human figure is often used as a key motif within these layers. There are various ways for it to appear within the work. It may be walking, strolling or in a hurry, standing or waiting, moving along in an everyday way. It may be introverted, turned away or withdrawn into a space not available to the observer. Schranner also works with and refers to particular spaces or places which she often connects with historic facts or her own biography. By sealing off the images within layer upon layer they lose their specificity and become anonymous, even generalized. Thus they could perhaps represent general aspects of our human existence. Layers and over - layering could be said to relate to the complexity of human life. The artist invites the observer to take a closer look. Only after exploring the work the observer is able to perceive the depths and possibilities within.
