“Loom” is one of 10 large scale monoprints made in July 2019 during the weeklong international arts festival Medea.Play/Under the Plough of time in Strellc and Isniqu, Kosovo, organised by stralli.org (Culture Club Kosovo) and transit.cc (Vienna). Almost 50 artists, performers, stage designers and architects developed site specific installations and events over a week and were joined by additional local performers for a final presentation. The 10 large scale and rain-proof oil based monoprints were created in situ from materials found on site and installed in the garden of a derelict fortified farm house (Kulla), alongside installations by other artists, which all served as playing fields for performances. The prints capture and document elements of the state of the site. “Loom” was made using elements of an old wooden loom. Exposing Painting to the Elements The mono prints are part of a series of paintings and prints, designed to be exposed to the elements. Paintings and prints, in general, are thought of as fragile, a maintenance problem, with changes in humidity being considered as a key problem. These experiments try to expose paintings to wind and weather, or the see, let them breath, be soaked. Oil paint, or even egg tempera, are extremely resilient. Using bungy cords, I found shocks from exposure to wind can be well absorbed, minimising damage to the fabric. The prints can be framed and installed indoors, or occasionally displayed outdoors, whereby any prolonged outdoor exposure will be experimental, any fading, wear and tear occurring over time would be part of the concept. In this sense it is up to any prospective owner to judge further exposure and develop the painting further. Repairs may be undertaken. There is no single stage, in which these prints should be preserved. They can also live and breathe every now and again, and thus may age and deteriorate. The prints will be shipped folded in a box. Some natural creasing of the fabric will occur which should be preserved as part of the concept.
