Subject: This work depicts a view of the moon as seen from the southern hemisphere. This painting captures a story of earth's interaction with the sky and humanities impact on a planetary scale. The moon is a piece of the earth broken away from the planet during massive collision early in the planet's formation. This bit of earth in orbit reflects the light of the sun and would appear white but for the refraction of light through our atmosphere and the pollution produced by humanity. Collection Description: Where Earth Meets Sky explores how the topography of the natural world influences human culture - religion, technology, and science - through the development and utilization of our built environment. The work looks at the moments of interaction between the forms and materials of the earth and built monuments to technology, engineering, and the divine that reach to the sky. Aerial views of iconic cities and architecture from Ecuador, Chile, and Spain interrogate the motives and outcomes of human constructions on high ground. From lookout points for protection, observatories to explore the mysteries of space, and sites to exalt the divine and reach toward heaven, human cultures have always reserved a certain type of architecture and use for the high ground. Other works highlight materials produced from the earth including bricks and quarried stone. These materials ground important and iconic architectural works to their place, and often signify much more than their functional role would suggest.
