Maas, seen from "De Maasbrug" Grave, Nederasselt, Netherlands Painting

Last year I walked on the footpath on John S. Thompson Bridge, "most people in the the Dutch surrounding call it "the Maasbrug " Often I cross that river Maas by car but this time I took time to have a walk with a friend. It was in the early evening, lights were shining on the river, it was a quiet evening and the colors of the sky were reflected in the water. At a distance we only saw the sides of the village on the other side of the water. When I was a child and a teenager I passed that bridge many times to go to school by bike. (when the weather was fine). I still can recall the smell of the river in that time, it smelled a bit like washing powder in that time. (I did not know that it was of pollution in those days, now situation is better). I hope that I can bring the feeling that I had that evening. I choose oil that is also because I can mix it for a long time to get the colors that I want.
