About The Artwork

The Eleusa (or Eleousa: tenderness or showing mercy) is a type of depiction of the Virgin Mary in icons in which the Christ Child is nestled against her cheek. In the Western Church the type is often known as the Virgin of Tenderness. The icon is written on a prepared board (linden, oak), impregnated with an antiseptic, covered with a textile and chalk ground (icon painting soil). The painting is made in the egg tempera technique. All colors are of natural origin. The gilding is made by hand from gold leaf. Ancient technologies and natural materials ensure a long life of the icon.
