“Mother and Child” is one of a series of western landscape works that emphasize prairie horizons. This work on paper is created in wax, oil, found object and icon printed on foil. I begin a painting by adding texture and colored wax (encaustic). The horizon is established and items are encrusted into the surface with layers of colored wax and paint added to create a rich, layered, textured surface. The surface is further manipulate by scraping, removing and digging into the surface. This process of painting and removing is repeated until a work is complete. The horizon is every present in this work. Horizon is the landscape. It is beauty. It is orientation. In this painting, religious imagery is incised into the paint/wax surface. A stamp size, Mother and Child, foil print is embedded into the surface inside a drawn house with wings. Found objects are further incrusted into the surface juxtaposed against incised drawn religious imagery and an orange rectangle within a purple square. This painting is one of a series explores horizon, earths crust, man’s influence and time. This work is on two pieces of watercolor paper.
