About The Artwork

The "Paintings Section" of the Davis Lisboa Mini-Museum of Contemporary Art features "Marcel Broodthaers 18 (M.B.)", an oil painting by Davis Lisboa. Conceptually inspired by a still image from Marcel Broodthaers' film "Figures of Wax (Jeremy Bentham)" from 1974, and formally influenced by Gerhard Richter's photographic paintings, the artwork explores artists who create their own museums. The Davis Museum is a recognized cultural entity by the Catalan Government, presented as a readymade sculpture and a non-profit collective art project. The section includes portraits of Marcel Duchamp, Robert Filliou, and Marcel Broodthaers, as well as still lifes representing their respective works "Boîte-en-valise," "Galerie légitime," and "Musée d'Art Moderne, Département des Aigles." Lisboa chose oil on canvas for its versatility and historical significance, using high-quality materials and framing the paintings in a square format. The artworks in this section are available for purchase to support the Davis Museum Barcelona project.
