ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is one of the paintings that is part of "The Paintings Section of the Davis Museum," one of the various sections of "The Davis Lisboa Mini-Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona" (). "The Paintings Section" is primarily divided into two categories: "portraits" and "still lifes." While the "portraits" represent the artists who created their own museums: Marcel Duchamp, Robert Filliou, and Marcel Broodthaers; the "still lifes" represent their respective works: "Boîte-en-valise," "Galerie Légitime," and "Musée d'Art Moderne." In this painting, my conceptual interest was to reinterpret a historic photograph of Broodthaers wearing a fake nose, posing in front of the rear door of a "La Continentale Menkès" art transport truck, a Belgian art transport company; and formally, to draw inspiration from Neo Rauch, a German painter known for creating enigmatic and unsettling paintings featuring surreal scenes with figures that evoke a sense of mystery and ambiguity. For this portrait of Broodthaers, I aimed to infuse it with a different meaning: it carries an ambiguous political satire, as if the painting were a campaign poster for Broodthaers in a presidential election, suggested by the French word "Votez" that appears above his head. Davis Lisboa's paintings are part of art collections in various cities and countries such as Viladecans, Spain; Atlanta, USA; Barcelona, Spain; Montreal, Canada; São Paulo, Brazil; Zele, Belgium; London, England; Blue Ridge, Georgia, USA; Uxbridge, Canada; Sint-Martens-Latem, Belgium; Nicosia, Cyprus; Indianapolis, USA; and Big Sky, Montana, USA.

Davis Lisboa (São Paulo, Brazil, 1965) is a visual artist based in Barcelona since 1986. Throughout his career, he has worked across diverse media, including drawing, painting, digital art, and video, exploring the boundaries between applied and fine arts, high and low culture, art and the marketplace, as well as craftsmanship and technology. In addition to his work as an illustrator and painter, Lisboa is the creator of the Davis Museum | The Davis Lisboa Mini-Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, an innovative online project that functions both as a work of art in its own right and as a platform for the promotion of international contemporary artists. This mini-museum, conceived as a conceptual artwork, challenges traditional exhibition conventions by presenting pieces that blur the lines between viewer and artwork, encouraging critical reflection on art accessibility and the democratization of culture. Lisboa has participated in numerous exhibitions and art events of international significance, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the global contemporary art scene.
