ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Conceptually, my inspiration came from a photograph by Man Ray titled 'Marcel Duchamp on his Deathbed.' On October 1, 1968, Duchamp died of a heart attack at the age of 81, in a silent and unexpected manner. He passed away at his home in Neuilly-sur-Seine, surrounded by bathroom accessories. His wife Teeny contacted Man Ray, who arrived with his photographic equipment to capture the last image of Duchamp, which is now lost. Duchamp's body was buried in the family cemetery in Rouen, with the epitaph "D'ailleurs, c'est toujours les autres qui meurent" ("Besides, it's always the others who die"), a phrase he had carried in his coat. His last day was pleasant, with visits to bookstores, friends, and a lighthearted dinner with Man Ray and Robert Lebel, who helped to spread his conceptual work. In the 1960s, Duchamp was the subject of major retrospectives that solidified his legacy. Man Ray collaborated with Duchamp on several photographic projects. How should we consider "Marcel Duchamp 19"? A historical painting or a work of art?
