My name is Mark Ormrod. I am a former Royal Marines Commando and on Christmas Eve 2007 I was injured serving in Afghanistan resulting in me having both of my legs amputated above the knees and my right arm above the elbow. Many people would argue that my prosthetic limbs are not adornments but I disagree. An adornment is classed as ‘an accessory or ornament worn to enhance the beauty or status of the wearer’ which in my opinion is exactly what my limbs do; they help me to look and feel more normal. To enhance this slightly further I decided to add some ‘tattoos’ (stickers) to my arm to bring out a bit more of my personality and these tattoos are something I am planning on making a bit more permanent in the near future. I’m not a huge tattoo fan like a lot of people are but since being injured I believe it is a way to help put your personality on show for all to see. The pictures I chose are of men I admire who came from nothing to be hugely successful. There are also some very motivating and thought inspiring quotes in there and in the future I plan to add to and enhance these.

I am based in . Taught by Vincent Wilson ( Penryn & Newlyn school of artists) my work has self developed since A level. I love to paint people. There's no such thing as an ordinary person, everyone has something extraordinary about them... something that makes them stand out from the next person. Always in oil, I love the silky fluidity of the paint. I also love detail, the little quirks that turn a portrait into a study, pattern, tattoos, piercings, lines. I enjoy the unconventional, people that grab my attention, unusual composition, sometimes with plain background, sometimes with a pattern that I choose. I paint everyday folk that I stumble across, and celebrities that I admire. I regularly undertake private commissions and these can easily be arranged, for more details please email curator@saatchiart.com I have twice featured on Sky Art's Portrait Artist of the Year resulting in my work being featured in their book A Little Book of Portraits produced from that series. Thank you for looking.
