ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This painting was created in honor of the traditional Mexican holiday, Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. After experiencing the loss of both my grandparents earlier in the year, I was inspired to create something that could honor their memory and offer some catharsis. The color palette is made to reflect the traditional colors of New Mexico, the yellow and red of the flag and the turquoise that often appears in jewelry or other traditional art. I hope that this piece can bring a sense of connection and honor to ancestors of the past for not only myself, but anyone who has lost someone that they love.

My art journey started fairly recently when I started pursuing an education and career as a mental health therapist, particularly in trauma treatment. While it is incredibly rewarding and sacred to be able to hold space for people as they share and come to terms with the most vulnerable parts of themselves, it is very heavy. Art and painting portraits has become my way of coping with this unique role that my job puts me in. I stare at people's faces all day and watch as they go through a range of emotions, so painting faces is one of my ways of releasing the heaviness of other's emotions while expressing my own.
