About The Artwork
This image was made by applying multiple layers of paint to 1/4" plywood. Each cut piece is wet-sanded and spray-coated with an industrial acrylic. The pieces are sanded down to reveal earlier layers of paint in order to suggest that the material, and the figures (which are sometimes typographical) once had earlier functions and meanings, which are now lost to history. The edges are finished so no framing is required. Because of the weight of this piece (40 lbs), it is fitted with French cleats for hanging. A description of how to safely hang the work is provided. It is named Masquerada to allude to the idea of constructing a new, and mysterious, identity.
