I started this painting in 2013. I wanted to make a mural in a Pulquería at that time and I made this painting to practice. THen it went thru various changes of colors and it was not until 2020 that I finally was happy with it.
the rabbit is a recurrent animal in my paintings, girl rabbits, conejitas, not so much as a sexy symbol but more as a metaphor for our innocence regarding the fact that we are animals that have a purpose in terms of reproduction and we are not aware of it until is too late. sometimes.
hands pointing down. as opposed to pointing up, to the sky or whatever deity. down to the Earth, which should be our main concern right now, i think.
this is how the agave looks like when the mescaleros in Oaxaca and other parts of Mexico process them to make traditional beverages. They cook this "piña" different ways, but when they smoke it, is really tasty.

About The Artwork

The story goes like this: a man in the country saw a rabbit acting funny around an agave. the rabbit was drunk with aguamiel, the natural juice of the plant when the core is broken. we are talking thousand of years ago. when there was a god or goddess for everything. so, the legend of the goddess of pulque was born: Mayahuel. we can think of her as a bunny looking girl, or dressed with bunny fairs.

I am interested in experimenting with sincretic images that capture the whole range of religious experiences. I am inspired by the architecture and mural paintings of the Aztecs, Mayan, Zapotecan and other peoples from America and I like to intersect them with the aesthetics brought to America by the Spanish, like virgins, saints and holy beings. I intersect them with a third paradigm which is my personal journey into Indian philosophies and the idea of enlightenment. The result shows where I am now, believing that art is the way, and being an artist is my religion.
