Medusa Painting

This painting is part of a larger series on feminine forms depicted throughout greek mythology. I was inspired by Medusa's punishment turned strength after the betrayal by Poseidon. Medusa has turned archetypes of the feminine form and made them powerful and destructive as the antithesis of beauty. I have incorporated copper into the work to represent layers of metamorphosis. The Medusa profile itself is tame in the image with a foreground emphasis referencing a cameo. There is also alternative forms of mark-making here such as stitching and engraving. Both of which represent a male/female dichotomy of the domestic and the technical. In sum, the work relies on juxtapositions and challenges perceptions of strength and beauty in our archetypical forms.
