As the name suggests, Memento Mori, this artwork is meant to be a reminder of the impermanent nature of existence. An abstract, undefined landscape formed of many layers drives the mind in search of images. Each viewer forms their own mental image of the composition, but uporn closer look one can see a male figure emerging with a face obscured, undefined but unmistakable. This face glances back from the shadows, losing itself in its background, conveying the message that all that is will cease to be. The use of multiple layers of ink and different textures create an intense feeling of heaviness and unrest, reflecting the anxiety charged human condition.

A visual artist and an architect, Andreea Hriscu was born in Bucharest, Romania in 1984. She studied architecture at UAUIM, Bucharest, from where she graduated with an advanced studies degree. Her abstract art, mainly black and white painting and photography, originates from the need to address existential anxiety, using art as a self therapy tool. She opened her first solo exhibition in April 2016 at the Romanian Cultural Institute in Beijing, China. Her use of ink reminds us of the traditional Chinese paintings, but a closer look reveals a totally new and original technique. Intriguing in their appearance the paintings depict organic compositions that hold hidden messages. The pictures created put the mind in search for meaning, and each person sees something else in them. In this way the paintings become personal both for the painter and for the viewer. What for the painter is a therapeutic tool, for the viewer becomes a mirror into their own subconscious. While in China, in addition to her solo exhibition she participated in a number of group exhibitions, and held Painting performances in collaboration with musicians in Beijing, Bangkok and Berlin. She is currently based in Berlin, Germany
