About The Artwork

My love for cats always has me thinking of ways to portray them. As a mahjong player I thought of having the cats playing mahjong. Because I usually portray them realistically I concentrated on the interaction between them and their personalities as they sit on blue cushioned chairs around a table with white tablecloth. Tiles are peachy pink. Green foliage and gray tile pavers with the deep blue late afternoon sky peeking through. On a late afternoon they sat in the garden to play a fun game of Mahjongg. Soon the game turned into a catastrophe as some of these feisty felines began to disagree. "You can't call that tile, she already racked hers! - Yes, I can! It's my house, I make the rules! - Oh, for the sake of all treats, just cut it out and let's play! I don't have all day. I need to go home soon and take my afternoon nap." Created on stretched canvas with high quality oil paints and canvas. The canvas is gallery wrapped with painting continuing around the sides. The depth is 1.5 inches. Wired and ready to hang.

As a former pianist and teacher who transitioned to Art after a strained finger forced me from the concert stage, I can say that the creative spark finds a way to go on. Just let it burn. My Dad, a commercial artist/illustrator, had passed on and left me his supplies. I took his signature (Zuk) a shortened version of the family name (Zukoff) and began my journey. After studying various mediums I entered my first art show and won First Place in Oils. A new career was born! I also studied Advertising Art and Design at SUNY and began doing pen & ink renderings for real estate ads, magazine illustrations and pet portraits. I soon realized that my love for cats was the constant evolving inspiration for most of my work. I particularly enjoy sharing their beauty, mystery and whimsical nature. While my work is realistic, I enjoy adding a bit of humor (realism with a twist). Animals (especially cats) are my favorite subjects and I hope people who see my work are inspired to treat them all with kindness and dignity.
