About The Artwork

Cool Kids (instadentity) – An art series created within the mindset of a junior high student intending to make the coolest poster possible for the school dance. The “junior high” mentality defines civilization today and the insufferable attempt at identifying ourselves in the glutinous and ravenous milieu of the social media main stream. We are a culture feeding our souls to the consumerist assembly-line black hole conglomerate that devours our very being. Questioning the influence of pop culture influence on society is not an innovative concept; however, it begs to be explored given the insurmountable and ever-changing social media monster that we currently face. For example, in a social media setting most representations of the self look simultaneously joyful and absurd and are occupied by people living out their fantasies embodying the status they wish to acquire. Are we to laugh or to commend this uninhibited self-expression? The question is, what role does mass media play in our lives and does it shape who we are and what we become? And if these realities are unattainable, what impact does it have on humanity as a whole? With such impossible standards of image, beauty, sexuality and upheld values are we forming a generation of confused and misconstrued youth? This body of artwork is filled with fabricated ideals of beauty and rapture, drawing you into the room only to expose that room as warped and unstable, constructed from stolen fickle fantastical representations of the individual. The series embodies little other than what contemporary art can represent, while exhibiting stylistic unity, illuminating the complicated negotiations facing personal identity in today’s current societal climate. Keywords: portrait, woman, keithharing, fashion, inspired
