About The Artwork

INSPIRATION: There is a botanical midnight rose which blooms at night and is protected by sharp thorns. She is fearless. She knows she can never be broken because she has an open heart. Unlike other roses her petals do not need to be warmed by the sun. She grows on her own, illuminated by the brilliant light that radiates from within. I based my human Midnight Rose on the botanical one THE STORY of the PAINTING: Through perseverance, she has grown so tall she has almost reached the moon–and the moon enjoys the company. He loves her, smiles at her strength and beauty and shines his nocturnal light upon her. He knows she does not need his lunar light, but he nonetheless delights in illuminating her. His radiance enhances the night sky. Midnight Rose basks in his light and enjoys his crescent form. It reminds her of an opening flower, just like herself. Rose and moon light up the indigo sky, which now sparkles with their enduring love. The stars reconfigure into a new constellation: they form the image of Cupid, shooting roses from his bow into the air. Cupid shoots for the moon and Midnight Rose but realizes it’s a difficult task. After many errant attempts leaving flowers floating among the stars, a few flowers actually reach the moon. The moon passes them down to form a midnight bouquet for Midnight Rose. I hope VIEWERS WILL FEEL all the love around us, the warmth of a moonlit INDIGO sky and imagine they are inhaling the heady scent of roses. I hope Midnight Rose will be a model for the viewers who want to excel at all their challenges. After all Rose reached for the moon and actually arrived there! And Cupid does hit his mark in this painting. TECH TALK: I work with acrylic paint because it is the most versatile. I use additives with it to follow time-honored painting traditions of working wet on wet and I use it's quick drying time for creating many layers. I use Charvin paints because of their dreamy colors and creamy consistency. The painted image continues on to the sides of the canvas and top and bottom of the painting so that the p inting can be hung (hardware is included) without a frame if desired.

As a painter, I am an explorer, uncovering, recording and rearranging the beauty of the natural world, as well as the beauty of human beings. I select and distill the very essence of my subject, harmony between nature and humanity, sometimes combining the two. This symbiosis makes the finished work even more beautiful than either of its constituents alone. When you first visit my fantasy world, you will notice a lot of extraordinary things going on in my paintings. For instance, I might substitute a bird for a hat, or a butterfly for a bowtie. These unusual substitutions function as symbols and provide subtle clues and playful suggestions about my work. The shapes of birds and hats, or butterflies and bowties, are so similar that viewers never even question the replacements. I pick the substitutes because they fit graphically and visually. But it is more than that. We as humans fit with nature. We fit together so well, in fact, that I am able to paint a natural object–a butterfly–in place of the bowtie–and viewers can see this as truth. My world will refresh you with its vibrant colors, textures, and interchangeable shapes as you immerse yourself in the integration of nature and humanity. You will be at peace with yourself and at one with nature. You will experience nature in a totally new way and see beauty in places where you never before thought to look.
