This is one of a series of portraits inspired by antique hand puppets. This one is the only one derived from an animal puppet, i.e., a monkey. I hope to convey a sense of personality in these portraits of inanimate dummies even as I would in the portrait of a human. These portraits are highly stylized with the lighted and shadowed areas of the faces rendered in shapes and accentuated with line. Oil is my first choice of medium as I love the richness of the pigments and their technical potential. The smaller paintings in this series are all painted on wood panels. I like the hardness of the surface and how the painted surface has a dull luster. They are framed in solid, matte black floater frames, thus exposing the edges of the wood panels which I have also painted for effect.

My extensive travels and the journals I keep, both written and photographic, have inspired much of my art as a painter. My early work focused on tropical still-life, landscape, and seascape as I was living/working in Hawaii and French Polynesia. Upon relocating back to California I became interested in the local landscape, specifically images of trees and orchards. More recently I have returned to the human figure and portraiture. The portraits have been of real people and, also, of puppets.
