I believe that color field painting need not be defined by either hard edges or rigidly segregated fields of color. This piece features fields of red, gold and turquoise that merge, separate and overlap to create a harmonious mélange. Blending a gentle gesturalism with overlapping color fields, th...

Don Davis is an Abstract Expressionist painter living and working in Los Angeles, CA by way of Houston, TX--with a childhood spent overseas. Due to his father's work as a petroleum industry analyst, in his youth Don saw the great cities and museums of Europe, and lived in Libya and Egypt. There he explored ancient Roman ruins, pondered the mysteries of the Giza plateau, and swam in the Mediterranean Sea. This breadth of experience has served to shape his approach to painting. As a student of history, Don places his work firmly in the tradition of the New York School. He blends the gestural freedom and heavy texture of Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning with a reverence for the power of pure color found in the greatest works of Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. Don thinks of his painting as a response to and a dialogue with these great painters of the past.
