About The Artwork

In this painting, I capture a moment of intimacy that brings together a matriarch, her daughter and her child. The scene, which is inspired by the universe of Lucien Freud, expresses maternal love through the choice of earth tones that recall the origin, the fusional relationship between the characters. The painting not only traces the passage of time but also describes, through its composition, a relationship of filiation where everyone clings to their offspring. But from this maternal love comes anxiety, the fear of emptiness and that of abandonment. Besides, who says that a mother's love is always serene.

Amal Jarrahi is a Tunisian painter from the city of Bizerte in northern Tunisia currently resident in Seoul, Korea. Her love for art is the result of her encounter with the many wandering artists that her father, himself a poet, often hosted. Later, she specialized in journalistic and academic literary criticism and became a doctor in French literature and associate researcher at the University of Aix-Marseille. The novel and poetry awaken a passion for art hidden deep inside her childhood, an awakening that translates into research projects on the relationship between literature and the visual arts. She did her first painting class in Iran where she spent 5 years (2014-2019) and where she participated in school exhibitions. She values the narrative aspect of the image, and therefore recounts her attachment to her land, not with words, but with the eloquence of colors that tell of the fusion of her characters with their motherland and their environment. This fusion is experienced and seen by the artist as complex because it is lived in the quest for oneself, in wandering and sometimes in the desire to backward time which never suspends its flight.
