This series began when I took notice of the everyday objects that surrounded me. One by one, I would set them down on an old matte board and would arrange simple settings to paint from life. It evolved into a daily practice for a month. When visiting my father in Colorado, he gave me some leftover copper flashing, which I thought would make an interesting surface on which to paint. With each painting, a small bit of the copper is left exposed as to offer a glimpse into this precious little moment. With each object, I would look for colors that popped but mostly aimed to depict the ordinary “lost-and-found” objects of our contemporary material culture.

About The Artwork

Grauer explores the construction of identity, how to memorialize objects and individuals through a contemporary documentarian approach to painting. Examples of the present becoming the past so quickly, he focuses on the documentation of time, memory and imagination and how through these aspects he may occupy the past, present and future. He is interested in the observation of that evolution of time and how it affects the artifice of the presentation of self, and finally, how by the act of creating a painting, the art itself acquires an identity and timeline of its own. Grauer has garnered success showing work internationally, including: being awarded a residency at Jentel, Blue Mountain Artist Residency and shortlisted for the 2015 Wells Art Contemporary Award. He has exhibited with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters at the Mall Galleries in London and the Salmagundi Club in NYC. Currently, he is showing with several galleries throughout the Hudson Valley and continues his practice of art and happiness.
