ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This portrait is inspired from a photograph taken 40 years ago of an Egyptian actress, who was once called “The museum Fugitive “ due to her uncanny resemblance to queen Nefertiti. “Back in the ’80s, the concept of ‘ideal beauty’ revolved around curvy white women, a mold I did not really fit into. So it’s a bit of a surprise that, some 30 years later, people are referring to me as a beauty icon!” Sawsan Badr (the portrayed figure) The image is of an original oil painting on canvas with gold leaf application adding luxury to the portrait representing the queen that she is. We women of color escape being tarred with the same brush in our daily lives and try to see through the disguises we hide behind so that we may become subjects in our own creations through self-reflectivity and individual self-development. Through this series I seek further conception of my own identity while offering a reminder of the beauty and grace of my inherited civilization in a contemporary representation .

Nostalgic elements presented in short-lived moments of figures in stillness , reverie or enjoying a moment of leisure ,create a connection with the viewers who may feel that they know these women, or perhaps, see themselves in the paintings.The backgrounds in most works are faded out or replaced with vivid colors giving no exact evidence of time or place and thus adding more mystery and room for interpretation.
