About The Artwork

This painting is part of a series of three still lives of shells of cultural significance. They are the smallest paintings I've made, each measuring only 15 x 15 centimetres, with neutral, light backgrounds. This painting shows the remains of a mussel dinner. In the Netherlands, mussels are a fairly common dish outside of the summertime: the rule of thumb is that the name of the month must contain the letter R, so any time other than May through August. I steam mine in white wine, with some carrots, celery stalk, and flat-leaf parsley.
