ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This is an abstraction of mussels and whelks adhering to a rock at the beach at St Ives. Exposed by the low tide the rock glistened and the shells hadasheens of different colours. The whole thing topped with seaweed. Keeping the basic shapes I have abstracted the various shells into just basic shapes and hightened the colours of the shells. I like playing with boundaries between figurative and abstraction, the boundaries between land and water. This piece captures this.

I started painting in 2014 and quickly became absorbed by it. I have had no formal training other than regular private tuition from Hugh Mendes. I am an artist who specialises in oil paints. I have a particular interest in landscapes and exploring the boundaries between figurative and abstract painting. My favourite subjects are water and the things that exist on the boundaries of it, as well as the more forgotten areas of cities. Occasionally I move entirely into abstract work as a sort of reaction to the more figurative pieces I have painted.
