Mutter Painting

I use intuitive processes to tap into the bodily knowledge all painters already possess; about medium; colour, consistency, texture, line, composition, surface etc, and of concept, symbolism, history.  The craftsmanship of linen canvas building, colour-mixing and detailed, labour-intensive drawing are key parts of my material process. High quality stiff linen, sized with rabbit skin glue and primed with clear gesso, is a necessary support to maintain the surface quality through the drawing process and the addition and erasure of layers of paint. I make abstract watercolours as intuitive responses to being. An instinctive process of trial and error arrives at not fully resolved forms, that show they are made by the artist’s imperfect body, not a machine.The materials come with their own ideas, which I, the artist, must negotiate with. The medium is not used to illustrate an idea, rather the work comes into being on the canvas.
