"In the genesis of her works, Nieves Legaspi feels close to the legacy of Informalism, to the contribution of Art Brut and aesthetic explorations that emphasize expression. She takes interest in the artisanal substrate of pictorial practice that counteracts the excessive prominence of technology in out contemporary world. She inclines towards a raw, primary production that establishes a direct emotional bond with the viewer. On this basis, she gives free rein to intuition, gestures that fix her subjectivity on canvases, to spontaneous decisions and to the fortuitous emergence of textures and shapes, which reflect the randomness of the creative act. She assumes the task of painting as a time of freedom governed by the unpredictable. Hence her interest on surprises, unexpected findings, everything that arises with no previous thought and produces uncertainty. This has made her identify with a phrase of the Mexican curator Guillermo Sepúlveda: “without mystery, things would be exhausted at the moment of seeing them”. Nieves Legaspi prefers an inexhaustible art. That each of her works be a trampoline to the stimulus of freedom and imagination. That the viewer discovers the path that communicates with the sensibility of the artist, but also, with his own emotion.
