ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting is part of my series "Deep Fake" which references the notion of “fake depth”, named after the term Deepfakes (a portmanteau of “deep learning” and “fake”) which refers to synthetic media in which a person in an existing image or video is replaced with someone else’s likeness. I use a combination of Gouache and Mineral paint for their opaque, ultra-matte velvety surface quality which absorbs rather than reflects light. The process of making these paintings is formulaic, and involves mixing each hue to just the right value so that all shapes in the composition move forward and backwards rhythmically. Like scratching away the silver wax on a lottery ticket to see the worth of what emerges, I never know if a painting works until the last color is filled in. Then I make adjustments until it sings. Singing means they vibrate between multiple forms / relationships / planes endlessly and non-hierarchically. They at once give the viewer something to chase/navigate and somewhere to rest. A peacock’s feather, an abalone shell, a soap bubble— these surfaces demonstrate the relative-to-light illusion that is color. When a form is unstable, embedded in the experience of seeing it is the sense of chasing it. In these paintings I’m searching for a vibration that offers both rest and revelation.

Kyla Kegler is an artist based in Buffalo, NY where she runs Agatha's, an independent performance and exhibition space, and teaches part time at the University at Buffalo. Kegler makes paintings that explore color theory towards the illusion of depth and layering on a flat surface; and performances that employ performers wearing large papier mâchét puppet heads dealing with existential disasters in a transapocalyptic multiverse. Kegler’s practice is shaped by work with Bread and Puppet (2006) and living in Berlin (2008-2016), where she co-founded underground theater Zuhause (2011-2013) and received an MA Solo/Dance/Authorship at Art University of Berlin 2015. She received an MFA in Studio Art, University at Buffalo (2018); launched House on Fire Show (web series made with 40 climate activist teens from across the USA (2021); launched Agatha’s— independent art and performance space, Buffalo, NY (2021); developed Mountains — performed at Artpark WNY (2020), Torn Space Theater (2022), Undercurrent, Dumbo NYC (2022); and is a founding member of BICA School, Buffalo, NY 2022.
