ABOUT THE ARTWORK

As a midwife at an earlier time now turned fine artist, Greeff’s conceptual work looks at the notion of the reproductive body and ideas around it. In this painting the artist has taken an image from a recent BBC news article about the pandemic crisis. The leaving for ‘home‘ and has been reimagined. The figures are exposed and vulnerable and all comfort of ‘home’ seems lost or confused. The pregnant woman on the left hints to the prospect of new life and the cradled baby is cocooned. Cocooning is a current term that speaks about this fledging new industry of working from home that is set to mushroom post lockdown. The colour palette is bright and pleasing as if the landscape (the earth) has been purged of its toxins (smog) and looking restored and pristine. The faces reflect anxiety and the tight huddle of bodies suggestive of family bonds and this sense of a lock or ‘lockdown’. Inspired by artist Miriam Cahn.

In 2015 I graduated with a BA Fine Art (Hon) from the University of CapeTown. My work is contemporary and current and the concepts I work with are often drawn from a rich reservoir of my earlier years as a midwife and psychiatric nurse. I interrogate ideas around the Body, Reproduction and emotional states.
