ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Clyfford Still was an American painter, and one of the leading figures in the first generation of Abstract Expressionists, who developed a new, powerful approach to painting in the years immediately following World War II. Still's overriding theme is the existential struggle of the human spirit against the forces of nature, a notion that finds expression in the vertical forms that reach defiantly through the majority of his compositions, and a struggle he evoked in his phrase 'the vertical necessity of life.' His expansive fields of color have sometimes been likened to caves or vast abysses momentarily illuminated by crackling flares of light. A believer in art's moral value in a disorienting modern world, Still would go on to influence a second generation of Color Field painters.

I create colorful and highly detailed works of art to express my love for the modern human as well as my concerns about contemporary society. My hyperreal paintings are based on photographs I took during long walks through my hometown and major cities. Paintings show people on the streets, in stores, public transport and museums or zoom in on popular products. To me these glimpses of everyday live are important as they say a whole lot about todays society. They show the way people act, communicate or are influenced by modern developments in various ways. I observe it, enlarge it and paint it. That way I freeze time and our fast and busy lives are forever captured in a moment. Finally ready to be observed quietly. About me: I'm an international recognized artist for over 20 years well known for his own style of realism painting. My art is in museums, galleries and private collections worldwide (6 continents, 30 countries). In 2018 I showed his works alongside Warhol, Haring, Banksy and others at a group show at his art dealer in France. I live and work in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands.
