About The Artwork
I collect discarded wood scraps on my ambles around town. I like to respond to the natural flaws and irregularities in the wood with my abstract paintings. The painted segments are like windows -- small glimpses to something bigger. They might be snapshots of my inner mental state or imagery from the landscapes I see daily on my walks. The segments move across the wood like a comic strip, and function like a time-lapse. I love compartments and boundaries -- any kind of container or buffer that makes me feel safe. I use my oil paint in a non-traditional way by applying it so that the shapes leave gaps or chasms where only raw white primer is visible. I also like to rub or scrape away paint so that parts are transparent and atmospheric.

I create compartmentalized oil paintings on surfaces such as discarded wood scraps, prepared paper, or canvas. The paintings are what I call "mental landscapes" -- both evoking nature and an internal abstract world. I think of each compartment as a window -- a small glimpse of something bigger beyond the visible. The rows of painted segments represent time lapses, and may function sequentially like an abstract comic book. The segments often wrap around the surface, terminate unexpectedly and disappear. My studio is located on the dynamic Space Coast of Florida. I'm currently Professor of Art at Eastern Florida State College, where I teach Drawing, Painting, and Design.
