Not Trying To Break The Silence - Painting

I’m Eirin Hallangen-Lake, a Norwegian-born abstract artist based in Liverpool, UK. My multi-disciplinary creative career spans over three decades, and is, in addition to abstract painting, marked by both international acting and large-scale public art installation work. My painting practice is profoundly driven by the elemental forces of my heritage and the love for creativity. Growing up immersed in the Norwegian fjords and coastal environments—a lineage that traces back generations to the Vikings—much of my work explores the dynamics of water, and raw elemental and emotional themes. With an MA from Rose Bruford College in London, I have performed for years on international stages, including The National Theatre (Norway), The Young Vic (London), and The Kennedy Centre (Washington D.C.). I’ve also worked for years designing and building public art installations for high profile clients, and I’m an award-winning fine arts photographer. Artistic Statement: I specialize in expressive abstraction, characterized by a deliberate diversity in techniques and styles. My canvases are visual explorations of raw natural and emotional energy, translating the powerful movement of water and pure elemental and emotional force into compelling compositions. In my many years of acting, my focus has been on telling stories, creating characters and convey human psychology, thoughts and emotions. This mind set plays a big part in the creation of my paintings. I sell only one-of-a-kind, original artworks. The night is my favoured time for painting. I work intensely but playfully, often in a trance-like state, orchestrating paint across multiple canvases simultaneously, usually accompanied by music. My process involves working primarily with acrylics on canvas, utilizing approaches that capture a wide range of expression—from explosive, highly-saturated energetic bursts to layered, atmospheric depths and much more. In my signature textural pieces, I employ techniques that integrates raw salt directly into the medium, in addition to creating textures with paint. I work playfully with the paint, rarely using traditional brushes. Instead, I utilize unconventional materials and tools like wood, metal, air, water, and gravity, embracing elements found around me. While most of my paintings are inspired by natural themes, this diversity allows the resulting compositions to explore a wide scope of emotional and conceptual territory.
