ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I painted this work while on holiday in Greece. It represents a moment full of potential, as fishermen prepare to set sail. In art museums I always enjoy the paintings, not usually great works, which tell a story about the lives of people who are far from the forefront of events. I remember one which I can't put a name to, in which a young woman has just arrived in a Russian village on the edge of civilisation. Posted there as a teacher, she sits with her luggage, scanning her future and looking desolate. At least my painting is more hopeful.
