About The Artwork
One evening the artist, who is also a scientist by training, started to paint a series of octopuses in ink. However, two of these paintings show cephalopods with less than eight arms like this one here. This marine animal might have lost some arms by an accident or just because the artist had forgotten her science when painting this little monster that evening. Cephalopods are quite interesting invertebrates with large brains, ink sacs, and arms covered with suckers. Octopuses are regarded as intelligent animals among the invertebrates. In addition, photosensitive chromatophores (colored pigment cells) interact with light and allow camouflage. In some species bioluminescence produced by bacterial symbionts contribute to the color of the skin and to signalling. Sometimes octopuses lose their arms by physical injury. Luckily, these arms grow again.
